Tidy Plots Allotments, Ystradowen. Grow your own on some tidy land!

A Vale Farming Partnership has set up a private initiative to help alleviate the allotment shortage in the Vale of Glamorgan.

Alun and Norman Jenkins of Talyfan Farm, Ystradowen set up their ‘Tidy Plots’ scheme in 2011.  “We were aware of a demand for grow your own” said Alun “and so far the response has been encouraging.  It is a wonderful experience for the children too, seeing and learning how food grows”.

The land is light soil in good heart in a beautiful area of the Border Vale.   It has already been ploughed and harrowed so it is ready to sow.  Real farmyard manure is available and there is also a tillage service to help those with a busy lifestyle.

One of the first gardeners to take a plot, Clive Farrant of Cowbridge said ‘It’s a very good scheme, the cost is very reasonable and there’s no long waiting list.   There’s water and rabbit fencing already provided.   The soil is a real pleasure to work and my vegetables are looking very well.   All in all I am very pleased.  My crop yields have been excellent and I am virtually self sufficient in own grown vegetables, and my fellow plotholders are a very friendly bunch.”

Nicole and Sarah of Happy Days Homestore, Cowbridge launch Pretty Nostalgic – and need your seeds!

We need your seeds please! Pretty Nostalgic, a Cowbridge based publishing company, is putting out a plea to residents of the Vale to help them with their Hampton Court Show Garden.

The show garden  is part of the new summer garden section of the RHS Hampton Court Flower Show called “Preserving the Community” and will be portrayed as a community country garden set in the Vale of Glamorgan.  It was the idea of Nicole Burnett and Sarah Legg, of Happy Days Homestore, Cowbridge who recently set up the company, which launches it first national home and lifestyle magazine called Pretty Nostalgic in May.

The garden’s design consultant is  multiple RHS gold medal winning gardener Anthea Guthrie who lives in Moulton.  Anthea will work closely with the Pretty Nostalgic team, who are based at Happy Days Vintage Homestore in Cowbridge and Cath Jones of The Cottage Garden to make a truly inspirational show garden. ”The Hampton Court garden committee have been very positive about our garden design and believe it will really engage visitors to the show” says Nicole Burnett, Director of Pretty Nostalgic. ”The concept of the garden is that it is created by members of the community who come together to share surplus seeds, plants and produce to make a low cost garden for the benefit of locals. It will include a produce preserving shed, cutting garden and herb patch.” We would love the people of the Vale to be involved and to grow and show plants and flowers from real Vale gardens”  says Anthea Guthrie.

Vale residents can help the team by donating any spare home harvested annual seeds they have collected from last summers blooms.  At the top of the wish list are cottage style annuals such as cosmos, calendula, cleome nicotiana, stocks, sweet peas, poppies, nigella, cornflowers, but any homegrown seeds will be gratefully received.  Please place in a sealed envelope, labeled with the type of seeds they are and with your name and contact details and any information you would like to share, and drop off at Happy Days. The healthiest plants grown from the donated seeds will appear at the RHS Hampton Courtflower show during the first week of July.
