Gwen Davies – Artist. Is that a Full Moon? Pick up her lunar calender from Little Shop of Calm and find out!

I am an artist living in Cardiff, I have always loved using bright colours and intricate detail. My main inspiration is the diversity of global spirituality and its connection with nature. I have been lucky enough to travel around Africa, India and Asia and have found great inspiration in the vibrant cultures I experienced. I am also fascinated by the folklore of Britain and Wales. I love the challenge of translating folk tales into images, and blending different cultures.
I have also recently completed a series of pictures inspired by my love of Arabic dance.
I work with the moon, and find that working in cycles really helps the flow of creativity, each year I create a lunar calendar to act as a reminder and to help me track where I am through the year!
I am also a henna artist and have recently branched out into using henna patterns and symbolism to create individual sacred works on canvas. There is so much to explore with henna, it can be really beneficial for the receiver as well as being a beautiful art form.
Gwen’s cards and her lunar calender are available from  The Little Shop of Calm, Cowbridge

Sue McDonagh – Artist, Writer, Entertainer, Owner of Scribble, Biker Chick

A Day in the life of an Artist.  Well, this particular artist anyway.

They all start with the dog walk – Scribble the Border Terrier comes to work with me at the Old Wool Barn, tucked away in Verity’s Court, Cowbridge – and LOVES to see visitors, if ever you’re passing, you can be assured of a waggy welcome! (and from him too)

These days I’m finding myself working to commission almost exclusively. My speciality for over twenty years has been painting children, and for the last few years, my work arrives via word of mouth, which I think is most definitely the very best type of advertising.

So there’s something being created on the easel all the time.

But not every day is the same – perish the thought! Sometimes I think I’m like a cat that’s always on the wrong side of the catflap – I always wonder if I should be somewhere else.

For a month I’ve been visiting St Illtyds Junior School in Llantwit Major and working with the children there.  We’ve re-created some of my landscape paintings using pastels, and we’ve also looked at portraiture and cartooning.  During the course of this I managed to blot my copy book by drawing on the pristine whiteboard with, gulp, my permanent marker.

The ever patient Mrs A Jones said that they would never forget my visit……

I also fit in demonstrating to art societies and occasional adult workshops all over the country, which I love.

I’m told I’m very entertaining.  Several societies have told me not to bother with the painting, just come along and make them laugh. Hmmmm.

I’ve also got the most fabulous camper van that’s signwritten with my paintings.  I try and get away to paint the landscape when I can.

Otherwise, it’s just me, the dog, Radio 4 and a box of pastels.  Or paints. Or whatever.

I can’t imagine doing anything else!

If you ever want a unique gift for yourself or a loved one, pop along for a chat with me (and the dog).
